It all starts with an idea……a spark, a flicker of emotion……. Some wait for inspiration, personally I believe it’s a waste of time to wait for inspiration…..you’ve got to work for inspiration. Back in the day when I first started writing music I used to continually let the music drive me. The song results were ok but not as focused as I wanted them to be. Nowadays I drive the music yet still allow the creative juices and ideas to flow and feed my melodies and lyrics.
An idea for a song can come from an overheard conversation…….yes, I ear hustle occasionally….an idea can come from a fleeting thought….a prayer…..happiness, sadness, heartache, love……..practically anything can create an idea. For me ideas are like air, I inhale them, and then with a lot of work and a breath from God, I exhale a song.
When an idea hits you that’s good it’s cool but when a great idea like “Please Don’t Listen To This” hit me it pierced my soul and virtually wrote itself. Imagine this…….I’m meditating one day trying to clear my mind of the latest news about Covid-19, overwhelmed about the societal unrest in world and it hits me out of nowhere…… What if there was a song challenging my ex not to listen to something……if she listens to it she’ll fall in love with me again…..
In my songwriter’s mind, I heard classical guitar, distorted guitar, acoustic piano, and the entire vocal arrangement all at once. You see, “Please Don’t Listen To This” is written, performed, and produced by yours truly with the help of my amazing team, Vannie, Jack, Élan, Michael, and Dídac. I say this not to be braggadocios……I say this to further the power of an idea. An idea who’s time has come, an idea that stemmed from a moment of calm reflection about our world’s challenges sparking a memory of a lost love. An idea that gives me the means by which I escape from the stressors that drown so many. Like “Please Don’t Listen To This”, all of my ideas are the life blood of my craft and I cherish them dearly. I believe an idea can change the trajectory of life……an idea can change the world! Do you have an idea?
